Widescreen world

When was the last time you saw an old-fashioned ‘square’ telly for sale, other than one sitting in the boot of a car on a damp Saturday in Dungannon?

I’m the possessor of two such televisions, both CRTs, both well over ten years old and each only 14” wide. I rarely watch TV, so why upgrade to a widescreen model? Ironic then that I recently had to defend my decision to shoot ‘Kesh Carnival News’ in high-def widescreen. But it was a no-brainer.

The daily reports were intended for online delivery—to be viewed on computer not some old 4:3 goggle-box. Also, it seemed only right to depict the Carnival in widescreen glory, not cropped into a format accidentally invented by Edison in 1892. Furthermore, my video host specializes in HD and the bandwidth demands on broadband users are minimal, so why not?

We live in a widescreen world where 16:9 is the new standard. So I guess that makes 4:3 ‘sub-standard-definition’.

Anyhow, to entertain the Luddites I’ve cooked an old-fashioned TV version of a KCN09 report, tastelessly squished into a tiny screen. Have a look and when you’re done please click through to view it as originally intended!
